Editorial : About the Author David E. Longest is a retired public elementary school instructor and lifetime railroad enthusiast. A member of the Monon Railroad Historical Technical Society, the Floyd County Historical Society, and the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, he previously authored Railroad Depots of Southern Indiana.
The book is based on Michael Welzl's thesis and attempts to make a case that the proposed out-of-band signaling both makes sense in terms of performance benefits, and is not in direct conflict with the aforementioned principles. So I'm sure that there are many engineers like me who have been waiting for such a book for a long time. This is one of the most refreshing critical theory books I have read in a long time. Writing in a way that is comfortable and casual -- almost like we were talking over coffee -- he made me feel like he was right there with me. Hank Miller is a renaissance man and reading his book makes me realize how he arrived at that point. YES it worked again. Clearly, reading the philosophy of the philosopher is the best and only way to learn their philosophy! I should have mentioned that I guess.
