I did not like the abuse of the young boy but it was the fact of peaking my interest I detested one scene of the cruelty of a young girl both physically and sexual abused. The chapters are rife with admissions of how he couldn't get interviews with people he wanted and many of the stories he does tell are based on email conversations. The two most glaring examples I remember are (1) an example of solving an algebraic inequality without any of the relevant symbols throughout the solution, and (2) a graph overlapping explanatory text so that most of the text was invisible.

In a few sections the author seems to have gone to great lengths to over-complicate the material, so much so that I was spending extra time on things I thought I already knew inside and out to work through problems both ways (mine and hers) to confirm that I wasn't crazy.
