Editorial : From Publishers Weekly CBS correspondent Bob Simon--who, with his three-man crew, was captured by Iraqi soldiers on Jan. 21, 1991--here describes his subsequent imprisonment as a kaleidoscopic nightmare of beatings, interrogations, uncertainty and fear. He explores his reactions with thoroughness and sincerity. The impact of his account, however, is diminished by the brevity of his ordeal--less than six weeks. But it should be noted that Simon is a journalist, not a combat soldier for whom brutal captivity is an expected risk. Nor is he responsible for his profession's decision to make him a hero since he didn't die for facing the consequences of chasing a scoop. Nevertheless, a certain sense of proportion, perhaps even a touch of irony, would have done much to leaven the pervasive self-absorption of this memoir. First serial to Newsweek. This is the third volume of Sir Isaiah Berlin's letters, covering the period of 1960-75, with a final volume to come. His involvement with Israel deepens, sometimes leading to frustrations. Interesting and impressive work of art!
Since I'm interested in art and its different representations, when this book has come to my sight, at first I was afraid it will be a boring one. Many of his comments are delightful, as when he calls Princeton University having a "reactionary establishment Charley's Aunt spa atmosphere/"
This is a delight, and a perfect book to complete one's collection of the other three volumes of Berlin correspondence. I've never experienced anything that intense, but I know what it's like to be in a situation you can't explain to anyone, and then be thrust back into "normal" life. To follow the course of Berlin's correspondence is to receive an outstanding education in all manner of things--as well a great deal of enjoyment.. "Building" is the third volume
