Editorial : About the Author Timothy Rees began his pursuit of painting in Arizona, where he was soon directed to Chicago to study at the historic Palette and Chisel. After two short years he began teaching to relate his experiences to aspiring artists. Prescribing to the philosophies of the recent movement Novorealism, he puts higher stress on compositional beauty rather than hidden symbolism or paintings that require extravagant explanation. With this in mind, he founded Studio Novo to begin training students to use techniques of realism to convey their ideas.
Expanded from its original version as an in class text, this information packed book takes an empirical approach to solving many of the common challenges associated with oil painting. Exploring aspects such as the effects of materials, lighting, composition, color, and drawing, Tim Rees's "Problem Solving" helps artists get past the technicals of oil painting and get to the business of making art. The book contains 26 black and white plates of the author's work and plentiful illustrations to illuminate the text, taking the reader through the format of Rees's 5 week class taught at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Art. This is followed by optional assignments for the reader to complete, as well as an appendix of useful problem solving information that would arise occasionally throughout the course. With concepts that apply across any style of realism, this practical companion is an invaluable tool for those wishing to sort through the complex world of oil painting.
A good friend of mine is an avid and competitive color-er (he's a honorary member of the LEC (league of extraordinary color-ers)). Drinking alcohol and cough syrup (for a codeine high), popping pills, fighting, stealing, and chasing girls filled his off work hours. It begins with Nina, a girl of about 7-8 years of age, who proudly announces that her mother has inherited a family heirloom, a lace tablecloth made by her great, great, great Grandma Lotty. The writing style is engaging and the book lavishly illustrated in colour, with step-by-step instructions for each different technique.
Recommended.. You can well imagine that my family and I are also searching for the warmest place of all! The Warmest Place of All is a really cute book. Instead of reading the descriptions about how IC fails under ESD and what happens afterward, readers can see what the failure sites look like in reality and learn the failure signatures.
